By Her Hand: Art of Native American Women & the Photographs of Edward S. Curtis

The Stamford Museum and Nature Center's new art and photography show, By Her Hand: Art of Native American Women and the Photography of Edward S. Curtis is taking place through December 1 and provides the opportunity to "meet" the Native American women that have combined natural resources with trade goods to produce extraordinary works of art. Selected from the permanent collection of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, their works are paired in this unprecedented exhibition, with the iconic photographs of Edward S. Curtis, who captured the last vestiges of traditional Native American culture in the western United States. His mission was to safeguard a sacred legacy by preserving traditional culture and personal histories through his photographs. This exhibition offers a palpable connection between object and artist and provides a powerful opportunity to experience Native American art and culture.

Women who developed styles and techniques that elevated the shapes, patterns and functions of utilitarian objects, such as basketry, pottery, textiles and beadwork, into works of art were identified as true artisans and their highly-prized works are part of this exhibition. Through Curtis' photographs, you can look into the eyes of a young girl who learned to adapt, yet remained determined to preserve her traditional culture.

Noted Native American artists from Alaska to Arizona, whose exquisite works are on display, include: Sally, a Wasco basket maker whose corn-husk creations were copied, but never duplicated; Maria Martinez, a Tewa/Tano potter who revived and protected the ancient secret of creating jet-black pottery; Scees Bryant Possock, a Washoe basket artist and sister-in-law of Louisa Keyser (Dat-so-la-lee); and Joseppa, master of the Pomo miniature basket. IT’S SUPER OCTOBER … WITH SUPERMAN ON IMAX® AND LIVE APPEARANCES BY MARVEL SUPERHEROES AT THE MARITIME AQUARIUM AT NORWALK

It’s a Super October at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, which is presenting some of the world’s greatest superheroes … both on the giant IMAX^® movie screen and also live and in person.

Superman is defending truth, justice and the American way on weekends in The Maritime Aquarium via the Hollywood blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has been digitally remastered into the unsurpassed IMAX format.

And Marvel Comics is sending three of its superheroes to Norwalk on consecutive Saturdays to meet Aquarium visitors and pose for photos:  Thor on Oct. 12; Captain America on Oct. 19; and Spider-Man on Oct. 26.  Times for each are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Who hasn’t dreamed of being a superhero; of having super powers to battle bad guys and alien creeps to save the day?” asked Chris Loynd, the Aquarium’s marketing director. “Whether you’re young or old, you’ve cheered on Superman, Thor, Captain American and Spider-Man and followed their exploits. They’re truly legends of our culture, and we’re excited to be hosting them here at the Aquarium.”

During the Marvel superheroes’ visits, youngsters can pose for photos and get autographs too.

Each appearance is free with Aquarium admission: $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for youths (13-17) & seniors (65+), and $12.95 for children 3-12. Kids 2 & under are admitted free.

Meanwhile, over in the IMAX Theater, the Superman story is playing out in the Hollywood film “Man of Steel” at 4 & 7:30 p.m. on Fridays & Saturdays and at 4 p.m. on Sundays. Henry Cavill dons the red “S” this time, as a young man who journeys to discover where he came from and what heroic tasks he was sent to Earth to perform. The film’s A-list supporting cast includes Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Dianne Lane and Kevin Costner.

“Man of Steel” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and also for some language.

Tickets for “Man of Steel” are $11.50 for adults, $10.50 for youths (13-17) & seniors (65+), and $9.50 for ages 12 & under. 

To combine an Aquarium visit with a 4 p.m. screening of “Man of Steel,” tickets are $31.45 for adults, $28.45 for youths & seniors, and $22.45 for children.

September and October at the Silvermine Arts Center

“Tree Muse II” by New York based artist, Christine Aaron

The set of exhibits opening at Silvermine Arts Center, located on 1037 Silvermine Rd. in New Canaan, CT September 15th will challenge the boundaries of perception. There will be a group exhibition that questions assumptions of what a book can be to; Amy Bilden's tactile domestic inspired sculptures; and the symbolically rich mixed media nature-based work of Christine Aaron. The opening reception will be on Sunday, September 15th from 2pm to 4pm. The exhibitions run through October 26th.

Christine Aaron's new exhibit "Liminal States: Beneath the Surface" focuses on themes of memory, loss and the passage of time in this rich mixed media nature-based work. Trees serve as a metaphor for the cycle of life; symbols of dormancy, growth, strength and renewal. Metals are rusted and oxidized so that time itself becomes an integral part of the completed work.

“Mending Broken Limbs” by Norwalk artist, Amy Bilden

The themes for Norwalk artist, Amy Bilden's new exhibit, "Inheritance," revolve around domesticity, including topics such as identity, sexuality, gender, and care giving. Her tactile domestic inspired sculptures map the artist's emotional and physical space, using a monotonous process in which she connects her internal and external landscapes. Simple daily household tasks can prompt a current theme in her art making.

The Guild Group show, "Beyond the Book," questions assumptions of what a book can be. Seven artists: Kerry Brock, Shiela Hale, Barbara Harder, Stephanie Joyce, Elisa Khachian, Claudia Mengel and Susan Newbold, use the concepts, craft and content of books as a springboard to create artworks that go beyond the book. Working individually and in collaborative conversations, employing a wide range of media, the group set out to explore and elaborate diverse pathways to and from the book. The result includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and furniture.

Old-Fashioned Flea Market at Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Sept. 15

If you like treasure hunts, the old-fashioned flea market taking place at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion located on 295 West Ave. in Norwalk in Mathews Park is an event that you won't want to miss. 

 The flea market is taking place on Sunday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the museum.

More than 80 vendors will be offering a variety of items from new to vintage, including antiques, repurposed furniture, collectibles, vintage jewelry, household items, clothing, and toys.  In addition, the Museum has donated 10 booths to area nonprofits that will exhibiting and be sharing their message with attendees.

While perusing the wares, shoppers will be able to view a display of antique and classic cars, have their children’s faces painted and enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers and pulled pork sandwiches at the all-American BBQ, courtesy of Michael Gilmartin Outdoor Cookers and Stew Leonard’s.  The Museum’s gift shop will also be open where shoppers can find fall-holiday items and other gifts such as vintage costume jewelry, porcelain teacups, and books on Victorian era art and architecture.  Proceeds from gift shop sales benefit the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum.

General admission to the event is free. The Museum will be open for mini-tours where guests are invited to walk throughout the Museum’s period rooms on the first floor and enjoy the beauty of the Victorian era building for  $5.  There will be docents available to answer any questions, and guests will have the chance to view the successful exhibit What Is It? Technologies and Discoveries of the Victorian Era that is closing October 6th.

Frolic at French Farm in Greenwich

French Farm - Greenwich Historical Society

French Farm on 516 Lake Ave. in Greenwich was the first property in the town to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975; and just recently it was designated as a Local Historic Property that will preserve it for future generations.  

Originally, the house was designed by H. VanBuren Magonigle and was built in 1911-1915 for Mary Billings French.  Today, this four-acre, 100 year old property has beautifully restored farm buildings and a rare plant collection that creates a series of distinctive gardens designed by late owner, David Wierdsma making this landscape a living work of art. Wierdsma inherited the property in 1972 and endeavored to preserve the original structures on the property and to create beautiful and whimsical gardens.

The farm is not always open to the public, however on Sunday, September 15, on behalf of the Greenwich Historical Society, the entire family is invited to visit French Farm for an afternoon of art and nature from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., rain or shine.

This is the perfect place to celebrate the final days of summer and explore this unique private landscape that is part gentleman’s farm and part living work of art.  Kids will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the farm’s animal occupants, enjoy a scavenger hunt, press cider, climb the “pterodactyl nest” tower, explore the fossil garden and enjoy nature crafts and activities on the lawn.

Adults have the option of two tours–one led by Florence Boogaerts, focusing on the horticultural aspects of the property; the other by farm manager Jacek Nidzgorski who will talk about the property’s cultural landscape, its collections and its origins and development. Artists are invited to set up their easels during the event, and photographers will be free to snap.

Buffet refreshments, served on the main lawn, will include an artisanal cheese board, seasonal bites and sweet and savory pastries, all created by celebrity chef John Barricelli of Sono Baking Company and Martha Stewart Everyday Cooking fame. August Concerts on Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk

Summer nights in Norwalk mean music by the Sound, and there is no better place to enjoy a concert as the sunsets than at Calf Pasture Beach.  In addition to music, four concert evenings begin with a classic car show organized by The Coachmen for several hundred-car buffs from throughout the tri-state area.

On August 1, Calf Pasture Beach welcomes Dinoman at 6:30 p.m.  Fun for young and old alike, Dinoman ((a.k.a. Bob Lisaius) with the help of life-size inflatable dinosaurs, and his raccoon Reflex (a.k.a. Paul Lavarek) combine audience participation, magic and mayhem to explore how fossils are made and what the earth was like when dinosaurs roamed the area.  At 7:30 p.m. Diamond- One Hot Night takes the stage.  This ensemble features vocalist Tommy Lynn and a ten-piece band from New York. Sure to delight, this show replicates Neil Diamond’s career from start to today. Musicians in the band have played and collaborate with performers like Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, Michael Jackson, Enrique and Julio Iglesias, Bruce Springsteen,Tommy James, and Gary U.S. Bonds.

Gunsmoke takes the stage on August 7 at 7 p.m.  This award-winning band has been entertaining Country & Western music fans in the Northeast for more than 20 years.  The band now is receiving national attention after its performance on “Ernest Tubb’s Midnight Jamboree,” America’s second longest-running radio show, which is broadcast from Nashville, TN, following “The Grand Ole Opry.”  Members of the band are Jeff DeMaio (steel guitar), Nick DeMaio Sr. (acoustic guitar), Nick DeMaio III (bass guitar), Gary Tokarz (drums) and Scott Tyler (electric guitar).  Please note there is no rain date for this show.

A Classic Car Show beginning at 6:00 p.m. on August 14 is followed by the music of The Barons.  The audience will be transported back to the 60s and 70s with one of the tri-state’s hottest “oldies” groups. The Barons are known for their 1963 hits, “Pledge of a Fool”, “Remember Rita” on Epic Records, and “Possibility” on Old Town Records under the name of The Crowns. The Barons have shared the stage with such groups as Brenda Lee, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, The Tokens, The Drifters, The Shangri-las, Lloyd Price, The Del Vikings, The Teenagers and The Chantels. The vocalists, led by Ronnie deAngelis, are Doug “Ice” Dorsey, Doug Muller and Francine Rodriguez backed by Tommy Ardise (guitar/arranger), Dom “Cuz” Cardamone (keyboard/bass guitar/drums/saxophone), Barry Nardi (bass note/lead guitar), Michael “Stix” Bossone (drums) and Ron Yovino (bass guitar).

On August 21 at 7:30 p.m. concertgoers will enjoy the music of Beginnings.  This tribute band brings to life the music of Chicago, recreating songs from every decade of that group’s hits. The veteran New York musicians featured in the band are Jason Chapman (trumpet), Adam Colombo (drums/vocals), Rob Cutts (tenor sax), Joe DeMaio (guitar/vocals), Ed Leon (trombone/vocals), Marty Safran (keyboards/vocals), Adam Seely (alto sax) and Mason Swearingen (bass/vocals). Please note, there is no rain date for this show.

The last concert in August, on August 28 beginning at 7:30 p.m. is a performance by Minute by Minute. This Doobie Brothers tribune band features Nick Ambrosino (keyboard/vocals), Tom Huber and Larry Lippman (drums/percussion/vocals), Diane Marketta (harmonica/percussion/vocals), Paul O’Dell (bass), Rob Sammarco (guitars/vocals) and arranger Adam Seely (saxophones/keyboards/vocals).

To complete the 2013 summer concert season at Calf Pasture Beach there will be a Classic Car Show on September 4 beginning at 6 p.m.  At 7 p.m. Sixology will perform classic rock from the 60s, 70s and 80s, this band features Steve Boccuzzi (guitar), Vinnie Deflorio (drums), Marc Fabrizio (guitar), Geof Skully (keyboards), Bobby Tirado (vocals) and Joe Valenzano (guitar).

Each Wednesday night throughout the summer, area residents look forward to packing a picnic and a blanket and heading to the beach to enjoy a relaxing evening of music beside Long Island Sound.
