Music Mountain announces 2017 music schedule

Music Mountain in Falls Village, Connecticut, is one of the premiere destinations in the United States for intimate chamber music concerts. Gordon Hall is one of the finest chamber music halls in the country with legendary acoustics and resonant, full-bodied sound. Music Mountain is the home of the oldest continuing summer chamber music festival in this country. Founded in 1930 as the permanent home for the Gordon String Quartet, one of the leading string quartets of its time, Music Mountain is celebrating its 88th season in 2017.

Music Mountain and its marvelous setting for both the musicians and the audience is justly famed. The centerpiece is Gordon Hall – one of the finest chamber music facilities in the country. Gordon Hall and the Music Mountain residences were built by Sears Roebuck during the summer of 1930. The property and the buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

With seating for 335 and legendary acoustics, Gordon Hall provides resonant and lovely sound, views of the gardens, grounds and hills from every seat or from the lawn, permitting listeners to savor music and nature as one. The recent addition of air conditioning and heating has allowed them to extend the season.

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, at 3pm, the 88th concert season opens  with Peter Serkin & Friends. They will play Piano Trios by Haydn, Schubert and Beethoven; the season concludes on Sunday, September 17, at 3pm, with The Juilliard String Quartet. They will perform String Quartets by Beethoven, Haydn and Dvorak.

In between these the opening and closing events Music Mountain will bring their audience an additional fourteen not to be missed chamber music concerts with many of  favorites including: the Shanghai and Penderecki String Quartets and the St. Petersburg Piano Quartet; in addition to thirteen Saturday Twilight Concerts.

The twin theme for the chamber music series in 2017 is Beethoven, with nine concerts highlighting performances of fourteen of his works, plus the Piano in Chamber Music that includes thirteen concerts with piano, to be played by internationally renowned artists.

June 25 Connecticut Historic Garden Day

Summer in Litchfield Hills and Fairfield County is awash with the colorful blooms of summer and the Connecticut Historic Garden Commission that cultivates our love of historic gardens has declared June 25 as Connecticut Historic Garden Day! This special state-wide celebration will take place rain or shine from 12 noon - 4 p.m. The historic gardens in Litchfield Hills and Fairfield County are planning special events and activities to celebrate their gardens and to make your visit even more fun. Below is a list of historic gardens that are celebrating the wealth of CT's beautiful blooms!

Bethelehem, Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden. Discover the treasures of the Bellamy-Ferriday estate. Stroll through the formal parterre garden designed by Eliza Mitchell Ferriday between 1915 and 1918. Grounds admission is free; regular admission applies for historic house tour.

Woodbury, Glebe House Museum and The Gertrude Jekyll Garden, Garden volunteers will be giving tours through the Gertrude Jekyll Garden and answering your questions about Miss Jekyll's design and the history of the garden at The Glebe House Museum. Admission to the garden is free, but donations are suggested. Refreshments will be served. Call 203-263-2855 for more information or visit www.glebehousemuseum.org.

Derby, Osborne Homestead Museum. Visitors can enjoy tours of the museum's lovely Colonial Revival gardens and learn about flower and tree legends and Frances Osborne Kellogg's favorite flowers. After strolling through the gardens, visitors can visit the historic house museum and learn about Frances Osborne Kellogg's passion for gardening and land conservation. Complimentary museum and garden tours will be offered every half hour on the hour.

Bridgewater, Promisek at Three Rivers Farm. Promisek gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about the Beatrix Farrand-designed garden and the history of the land. Violinists from The Hartt School will perform from the garden terrace, and iced tea will be provided. For those wishing to sketch, draw or paint, please do! Admission is $5 per person.

Wilton, Weir Farm National Historic Site. Celebrate Connecticut's Historic Gardens Day at Weir Farm National Historic Site, where gardens and art go hand-in-hand! From 12pm to 4pm, park staff and Garden Gang volunteers will offer short informal talks in the Sunken Garden and Secret Garden about each garden's history, flowers, restoration, and ongoing preservation. In addition to the talks, visitors can spend an afternoon painting en plein air in the only national park dedicated to American painting. Join a professional art instructor from 1 to 4pm for informal art instruction using the park's free-to-use watercolor supplies! Be sure to see inside the visitor center for a special exhibition featuring contemporary paintings, photographs, and prints inspired by the park's gardens, buildings, and landscape.

GIANT “TAILGATE TAG SALE” COMING JUNE 10TH in SOUTHPORT

Back by popular demand, Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport is once again hosting its giant, one-of-a-kind “Trinity Tailgate Tag Sale” on Saturday, June 10^th from 9am-4pm.  This event will take place in Trinity Church's parking lot, located on the corner of Pequot Avenue and Center Street in Southport.

This year, over 40 families will set up spots and sell. Treasure hunters can browse through antiques, clothing (Vineyard Vines, Patagonia, Lily, Coach, Hermes), handbags, scarves and accessories, china, silver, housewares, children’s party clothes, kayaks, mountain bikes and more.  There will also be a "Merchants Row" where tag sale treasure hunters can meet local merchants including those from: Bespoke Designs, Two Bs Accessories, Little River Farm, DFM Stationery and more.

Experience Birds of Prey @ Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy

The Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy located on 55 Duck Pond Road in Litchfield is one of the few facilities in the United States that offers a falconry experience run by Master Falconer and LRWC's Director of Aviculture Nick Tiberio. 

Master falconer Nick Tiberio is the Director of Aviculture at LRWC and has 16 years of experience working with birds of prey. He has hunted and flown a wide range of raptor species including hawks, falcons, and owls. Prior to joining the Conservancy, Nick worked as a professional abatement falconer in New York, training and flying a team of abatement falcons to deter pest birds from landfill grounds.

Participants in this unique experience will personally interact with birds of prey as well as learn about heir adaptations, conservation, and how they are trained and handled for falconry while watching their free-flight.  It is an unforgettable experience to have one of these magnificent birds land on your gloved hand.

Falconry experiences will included a lesson on the the fascinating history of falconry, the equipment, the birds and their training as well as learning about the biology, life history, and conservation of birds of prey. There will be free flight demonstrations as well as a hunting demonstration, hawk walk and the chance to meet the Conservancy's owls face to face.

LRWC is home to a diverse group of Birds of Prey that includes: Harris's Hawk named "Alula",  aSaker Falcon named "Paris", a Eurasian Eagle Owl named "Camo" and a Barn Owl named "Poppy".  Each bird has unique adaptations that make it a top predator in its respective environment and thus each brings a fascinating perspective to our falconry experiences.

The Introductory session is $100 per participant and $25 per non participant and includes handling and flying a a trained Harris's Hawk while learning about raptor behavior and conservation.

A hawk walk that consists of a  walk in the woods with a trained Harris's Hawk flying back and forth from your
glove to the trees while learning about raptor behavior and conservation is $150 per participant and $35 per non participant.

The 90 minute extended experience where you will meet all the birds of prey os $225 per participant and $50 per non participant.

10th Anniversary Summer Party @ The Glass House

The Glass House is hosting a tenth year anniversary party to celebrate the opening of this attraction as a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  The Summer Party will be  held on Saturday, June 10th from noon to 4 pm. With generous support from Crozier Fine Arts and additional support from DEAN & DELUCA and Janice Parker Landscape Architects, the Summer Party features a festive picnic by South End, champagne by Taittinger, lawn games, music, and an auction powered by Paddle8. The event will also feature the world premiere of The Metamorphoses, a performance installation conceived by Jonah Bokaer Choreography. Bokaer performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the museum's opening celebration in 2007.

Guest are invited to stroll the 49-acre landscape and enjoy our two exhibitions on view: Julian Schnabel: "Paintings that I hope Philip and David would like," an intimate survey showcasing Julian Schnabel's prolific painting career, and Robert Indiana: One Through Zero, the complete set of Robert Indiana's ONE through ZERO, 6-foot-high COR-TEN steel sculptures on public display for the first time together.

Westport's 26th Annual Hidden Garden Tour

If you love gardens, history and crafts, the 26th annual Hidden Garden Tour scheduled for June 11 from 11 am - 4 pm  organized by the Westport Historical Society should be on your bucket list of events to attend this summer. Tour-goers will have a very special opportunity to experience six spectacular, not-to-be-missed gardens in Westport, Southport and Easton. Each garden has been carefully selected in honor of this tour and one garden, a favorite of past tours is being showcased again so tour - goers can see how it has grown and evolved.

Exceptional sights to see include: a property inspired by the gardens of Monet in Giverny, France; a seven-acre estate with a pool and pool house adorned with parterres of pale pink Bonica roses edged in English boxwood; a garden belonging to a Master Gardener which is entered through a honeysuckle-covered arbor; a cottage garden with cast iron ornaments, walls, evergreens and dried grasses; a property set behind the Aspetuck Land Trust with an English Garden with a fountain and several garden areas; and a property with a pool and new Bluestone patio with tulips, lilacs and climbing roses.

To  round out the fun, on the day of the tour, there will also be a Garden Market on the WHS Wheeler House lawn from 9am to 5pm. Admission to the Garden Market is free and will feature a variety of local artists offering items such as lavender filled silk pillows, meditation pillows, jewelry, necklace charms, as well as linen tabletop accessories. There will also be vendors selling antique prints and vintage silver, crystal and glass items.

Barnum Festival A Barnumpalooza of Family Fun!

The annual Barnum Festival is a seasonal celebration of the City of Bridgeport and its surrounding towns including Monroe, Trumbull, Easton, Shelton, Stratford, and Fairfield. Dating back to 1948, the festival originated to help support local businesses and honor P.T. Barnum—a world-renowned showman and city leader. The Barnum Festival events span May 13 - June 25, 2017 and culminates in a weekend-long Barnum Palooza that hosts parades, concerts, fireworks, and other family-friendly festivities.

The festival celebrates many of Barnum's imaginative concepts for entertaining the populace. The Wing Ding Parade for kids at Beardsley Zoo, concerts and musical competitions in the spirit of Jenny Lind, and the concluding event, a grand civic parade celebrating all of the wonderful assets the City of Bridgeport and surrounding area have to offer, are created to delight attendees of all ages.

On May 28, Memorial Day weekend join the Barnum Festival for the Aquarion Water Company Barnum Festival 5k & 10k Road Race. The timed race will begin at 8:30am at Webster Bank Arena taking runners along the picturesque Long Island Sound through Seaside Park with heart-thumping finish inside The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. There will be a FREE Kid's Run in the Ball Park with kid's prizes, a Bounce House, face painting, clowns & a magician to keep the fun going post-race. The race will be followed by The Best Race "After-Party on Earth" featuring great food & beer, a live band, swag bags, Dri-Fit shirts & tons of fun for the whole family.

On June 1, you can eat, drink and be merry!  Join festival goers for a day of fun hitting the hot spots of historical Black Rock. The Wing Ding Parade takes place beginning at 9 am on June 17 at the Beardsley Zoo.Bring the whole family for a day filled with excitement and entertainment. Get creative as you dress up for the kid's parade through Beardsley Zoo. Your means of transportation are up to you—make a float, pull a wagon, ride a bike, or just walk together. Prizes will be awarded for best costume. Enjoy entry to the zoo until 12pm, as well as face painting, balloon animals, music, and food. It's fun for the whole family. Registration opens at 9am and the parade starts at 11am. Admission is FREE.

June 24 promises to be a "Barnumpalooza" of family fun from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Seaside Park! The Barnumpalooza is an all-day festival with food trucks, live music, and carnival rides for kids. Bring the whole family for a day of fun celebrating the city of Bridgeport and its surrounding communities. Admission is free. The Bridgeport Symphony will perform at 9 p.m. and there will also be fireworks at 9 pm. that is sure to impress the whole family.

The Barnum Festival concludes with the "Great Street Parade" that begins at 12 noon. Firetrucks, bands, floats, clowns, and more will travel from the corner of Brooklawn and North Ave all the way to the corner of Lincoln Blvd and Capitol St. in Bridgeport.

Down on the Farm in Darien

The Darien Nature Center is gearing up for its annual Down on the Farm event, a day that brings good old-fashioned fun for the entire family to Darien. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Cherry Lawn Park. The rain date is Sunday, May 28. Early entrance for families with special needs children will be at 9:30 a.m.

Whole Foods Market, Darien is back as a title sponsor, serving a barbecue of hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, chips, drinks and fresh fruit. There will also be an ice cream truck, sure to help beat the heat for adults and children alike.

This event boasts many family fun events such as a live sing a long children's concert, pony rides, and a petting zoo with ducks, goats, rabbits and donkeys that will be sure to thrill kids. There will also be a display of farm equipment with the opportunity to climb a tractor. Picnic games,a scavenger hunt on the trails, a photo booth, face painting, and pop up shops round out the fun.  

This years raffle tickets are $10 each and the Grand Prize is a $1,000 gift certificate for the party of your dreams for 20 friends in the gallery of the Darien Nature Center; the first prize is a whale sculpture by Edgar Breban, the second prize is a $160 gift certificate for a 2 hour public sail on the Soundwaters Schooner and the third prize is two tickets to the Glass House in New Canaan. The drawing will take place at 1 p.m. on May 27.

The Lilac Girls @ Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden

On June 10 the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden located on 9 Main Street North in Bethlehem is hosting the Lilac Girls Tour and Walk with best selling author Martha Hall Kelly. This event is based on the best selling book about Caroline Ferriday and guests are invited to her Connecticut home.

New York Times Best Seller Lilac Girls is based on the true story of New York socialite Caroline Ferriday who championed Ravensbrück Concentration Camp survivors known as Rabbits. The story is based on the lives of three real women that intersect when one is sent to Ravensbrück. This acclaimed debut novel reveals a story of love, redemption and terrible secrets that were hidden for decades.

The author, Martha Hall Kelly will be the  highlight of this event, Lilac Girls. The book details a great story of Caroline Ferriday, a warm hearted generous woman whose courageous actions are no longer forgotten.

George Krimsky, Class of 1960: The Cold War at The Gunnery and Beyond

On Monday, May 22 the Gunn Museum in Washington is hosting a free program at 6:30 p.m. in the Wykeham Room of the Gunn Library located on 5 Wykehem Road that relates to the Cold War.

The highlight of this program will explore the research of the Gunnery's Gunn Scholar, Dana Ross, a student from Moscow, Russia which stretched from Moscow University and the KGB archives to Mr. Krimsky's personal archives.

Tracing the Cold War through the reminiscences of Gunnery alumni and faculty, a Russian general, a prominent Soviet dissident's daughter, the Gunnery archives, and interviews with Mr. Krimsky, Ms. Ross has used Mr. Krimsky's story as the subject around which to build her thesis. 

Before his death in January 2017, Mr. Krimsky generously shared the considerable archive of materials from his Associated Press posting in Moscow from 1974 -1977 when he became the first western journalist expelled from the Soviet Union after the initiation of detente by US President Nixon's visit to the USSR in 1973.

Some of the items displayed in this exhibit are on loan from the Gunn Museum. The Brookfield Historical Society is  open Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and is located on 165 Whisconier Road. 

Fairy Festival @ Bellamy Ferriday House May 20

Calling all fairies, elves, gnomes, pixies, leprechauns, woodland and mystical creatures – as well as regular folk – for a day of enchantment and delight at Connecticut Landmarks' Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden! Get your passport to the land of magic, art, and music and join us at the maypole on Saturday, May 20th from noon to 4 pm (rain date: May 21st).

Enjoy tea with a fairy godmother, and stroll along the woodland walk to build a fairy house. Visit the vendors at the craft fair and see the craft fairies. Make ribbon rings, fairy globes, magic writing, and then participate in a fairy and wizard parade! Sprinkle fairy dust on cookies at Tinkerbell's cottage, pony rides and enjoy the entertainment in the fairy ring theater. All for one admission price!

Create your own fairy house to enter in our fairy house competition. Prizes will be awarded for both adults and children. Entry forms must be submitted by May 13th and completed houses may be delivered on Thursday or Friday, May 18th or 19th from 10 am to 5 pm.
